Chemistry

Chemistry is a universal and dynamic subject. The importance of Chemistry is that it serves as the interface to practically all the other life sciences as well as physical sciences, and also to many other areas of human health and organism’s endeavors. For this reason, chemical science is often said to be the “central science”. The emerging trend in chemical research is the synthesis of products or chemicals and involving technologies that are environmentally friendly, which is a great achievement of contemporary researchers in chemical sciences, as in some cases it helps to sustain the environment.

The Department of Chemistry, which is one of the vibrant departments of Karnatak Science College, Dharwad was established in 1924. At the beginning, under the leadership of eminent chemists Prof. Alim Chandani and Prof. K.S.Nargund, the department grew to greater heights. Since then, it has trodden the path of more than nine decades. The department is enriched with ten scholarly permanent teachers with doctoral degree and 16 teaching assistants. The department has well equipped laboratories and an independent library, the latter with more than 5100 books and equipped with ICT facility serves about 80 students pursuing their Post graduate degree in Chemistry, 600 students studying in the undergraduate (B.Sc.) course and 25 students under Ph.D. program. A few under graduate students of the department have undergone training in National and International reputed institutions like JNCASR, IITs and NCL. Majority of the faculty members are recognized as Research Guides by the Karnatak University, Dharwad. The department possesses basic research amenities, including several sophisticated instruments required for research activities. The Department of Chemistry at KScCD is rated as one of the best for its teaching and research activities.
