Department of Physics, Karnatak Science College, Dharwad (KCD) was established in 1917. At present, the Department is celebrating 100 years of its existence. The department conducts theory and practical classes for students of undergraduate (UG) course in opt. Physics (B.Sc.). In addition, Electronics is offered as an optional subject (from 1994) and Computer Science is offered as optional subject with effect from 1995. Also, PUC classes in Physics (PUC I and PUC II) are also being conducted. A significant development in the department is that, from 2011, the Department is successfully conducting M.Sc. (PG) course in Physics, on self - financed basis. A few M.Sc. students have successfully qualified in UGC- CSIR examination for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professorship.

The Department of Physics is presently housed in separate imposing building facing the football ground, at the entrance of KCD. It is the first building which is encountered while entering KCD campus from main gate. The foundation stone of the “Physics Building” was laid by late Hon. Shri. Morarji Ranchhodji Desai, the then minister for home & revenue department, Govt. of Bombay on 17th November 1951. The Department of Physics has three lecture halls P1, P2 and P3; P1 is gallery hall and is fitted with LCD projector. P2 hall is mainly used for M.Sc.(PG) theory classes (a portable LCD projector is used). There are six well equipped laboratories namely Electronics laboratory, Computer Science Laboratory, B.Sc. I / II & B.Sc. V/VI lab B.Sc. III/IV lab, (which has a classic dark room) and the P.G. (M.Sc. Physics) laboratory, in addition to PUC laboratory.
